Southill Plus is a small service based in Southill, in a community based about two miles from Weymouth town centre. It is in a secure building, over two floors, with small garden spaces.
Facilities, activities and services offered
The service offers person-centred support to people with dementia and memory difficulties and the daily interactions and activities reflect this. There is a varied programme of activities, including bingo; table top games such as scrabble and dominoes; gardening; flower arranging; gentle exercise; music; quizzes; jigsaws; arts and crafts; sensory activities and discussion groups. There is a community bus trip every Thursday where local and much-loved areas and attractions are visited and clients can choose places to visit.
Local people and organisations visit to give talks about various topics: ‘See the Owls’ are regular visitors.
The service has a very popular robotic Pets as Therapy (PAT) dog – giving that something extra that humans cannot!
Rooms are decorated in a dementia friendly way and this enables clients to maintain some independence.
There is a wet room in one of the larger bathrooms, where a fully supported showering service is offered to clients for an agreed charge.
Support to carers
Signposting, advice and guidance is provided, and the service offers daily respite attendance to support carers.
Southill Plus is open 8.30am to 4.00 pm Monday to Friday. It is closed at weekends and on bank holidays.
The building and its facilities can be hired out of hours. Three of the downstairs rooms are self-contained, with their own entrance. Charges and further information are available on request.
