Sherborne Connect, known as The Shielings, is a small service for the people of Sherborne and outlying village communities. It is located in a lovely double fronted Victorian house in a mainly residential area within half a mile of Sherborne town centre.
Facilities, activities and services offered
Varied activities are offered including quizzes; crosswords; arts and crafts and reminiscence sessions to promote mental stimulation, and exercise sessions; skittles and boules to promote physical stimulation. Arts and crafts; gardening and cooking is also offered. Activities can be tailored to meet individual needs and interests. Musical activities are popular, and there are regular musical events when local entertainers play for the clients.
Sherborne’s community access programme enables clients the opportunity to access their local community and become valued members and contributors. The centre is proud to be involved with the Sherborne in Bloom competition.
Bathing services are offered in the well-equipped bathroom with a Parker bath and an overhead hoist, with options for additional support from one of the service’s dedicated carers. Prices for this additional support service are available on request.
Support to carers
‘My Time’ Carers Support Group is held on the first Thursday of the month (between 2 and 3.30 pm) in partnership with local GP practices and Dorset County Council. Carers’ loved ones can join in the centre’s activities whilst they attend the meeting, when arranged in advance.
Open days and coffee mornings are held throughout the year, which gives carers the opportunity to see the facilities available to their loved ones if they would like them to attend for respite care and support.
The staff also provide informal support to carers through signposting and advice and daily respite attendance to support carers.
Sherborne Connect is open from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm Monday to Friday. It is closed at weekends and bank holidays.
There are various rooms available to hire out of hours: charges and further information are available on request.
Sherborne Connect also runs an award-winning outreach service, offering a range of work based activities, known as The Green Shed.
The Green Shed
The Green Shed is located in a large workshop at the read of Castle Gardens in Sherborne.
Irrespective of level of ability, clients participate in a wide range of activities and are supported to make items from wood and other materials which are produced to a high commercial standard. There are no deadlines or orders, but instead the clients produce what they can, when they can and all products are sold in Castle Gardens.
The Green Shed offers its clients social inclusion; community integration and job satisfaction. They have the chance to learn new skills and have an enjoyable time.
The service welcomes clients referred by the local council or clients privately funding their support, and hourly charges are available on request.
The Green Shed is open from 9.00 am to 12 noon on Monday and 9.00 am to 4.00 pm Tuesday to Friday. It is closed at weekends and on bank holidays.
Clients may attend the workshop at times to suit them. Visitors to the service are welcome.
