“My name is Jackie and I am 74. I have cared full-time for my husband for about 15 years, since I retired.
My husband, John, has had 3 strokes and numerous TIAs. The combined effect of these has been the creeping damage of vascular dementia. He has gone from someone who could walk with assistance to someone who now needs help with everything he does and spends more time in a wheelchair. He has attended Dorchester Connect day service for several years, initially one day a week and now on three days. He thoroughly enjoys his time there and has never said he doesn’t want to go. I think the ambience, the terrific staff, other clients and the activities keep John motivated, happy and alert.
For me the day centre is a lifeline. I couldn’t manage to care for John without the wonderful job the staff do on those days. I need the physical break and the mental relief of knowing that John is safe, well-looked after and happy. The day centre fulfils all these needs. The staff are like extended family while John is there.
Support for carers is a big part of the service with regular reviews and supportive, informative monthly carers’ meetings which are followed by carers’ lunches where we bond with each other and share our similar problems/solutions.
I would recommend any carer in my situation to consider a Tricuro day service”.
